Specialist in Periodontics

Syed Abad

I have been a Specialist in Periodontics (gum disease) since 2013 when I completed my 4-year General Dental Council recognised specialist training at Guy’s Hospital, London. It was during my undergraduate dental education and subsequently whilst working in general dental practice that I developed a real liking towards this particular discipline of dentistry. Working as a Senior House Officer at the Leeds Dental Institute further confirmed this as the area of dentistry in which I wished to concentrate my further education and career.

Gum disease is a serious and often subtle disease, which is the leading cause for tooth loss in adults. This loss can have a significant impact on an individual’s confidence and quality of life; a fact that I truly understand and am sadly accustomed to in my daily practice. A lot of the patients I see and treat have chronic gum disease that has not been able to be stabilised by routine treatment. I have the training, knowledge and skills to help patients who have these challenging gum problems requiring specialist treatment.

I love and have great passion for helping my patients manage their oral health and working together with them to ensure they can keep their teeth for as long as possible. My clinical practice has been totally dedicated to periodontics since 2013, and I have developed a reputation for successfully managing gum disease through a very sympathetic and caring approach, patient education and using up to date evidence-based treatments complimented with the latest dental biomaterials. The video on YouTube called the "Sound of Periodontitis" is very useful and educational, having a series of interviews of patients who have had specialist treatment for gum disease.

I have particular interest in the treatment of advanced gum disease and gum surgery, as well as the management of dental implant complications.

I graduated from GKT Dental Institute, Kings College London in 2003 and completed one year of Vocational Training in West Yorkshire. Following this, I spent the next 5 years working in various hospital departments and as an Associate Dentist in General Dental Practice. This enabled me to complete postgraduate qualifications, develop my clinical abilities and knowledge. My experience culminated in my decision to undertake the 4-year specialist-training programme in Periodontology at Guys Hospital, London. During my training, I also worked in a specialist dental practice providing periodontal treatment.

I look forward to being able to help you to keep your teeth for as long as possible.

I welcome patients requiring treatment for the following:

  • Gum disease (Chronic and aggressive periodontal disease)
  • Building back gums and supporting tissue (Conventional and regenerative periodontal surgery)
  • Gum disease around implants (including bone loss)
  • Repairing recession defects
  • Thickening up of the gums (gingiva) prior to orthodontic treatment
  • Crown lengthening surgery – aesthetic and functional
